Controversy is still embroiling the planned development of 1 University Place in University Heights- a lot of the community is still very much against the idea- which calls for the development of condos and commercial space on the site currently occupied by St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Melrose Avenue.
The developer (surprise, surprise) is requesting a TIF district be established to I guess, help him out. But unfortunately, University Heights isn't big enough to fund a TIF district by itself- so it's going to county with a proposal for a joint one.
I'm all for promoting development in any given community through whatever means voters and the appropriate authorities want to pursue, but in this case, I'm going to have to side with the anti-development crowd on this. If your community can't afford to float of a TIF by itself and needs outside help, should you be doing it?
