Helen Thomas Retires

Helen Thomas has retired. In the world of punditry, this apparently is a huge deal, but quite frankly I've never been impressed with Helen Thomas. To me, she was just the really, really old lady at White House Press Conferences that always asked questions so pathetically and anachronistically left-wing, she made Stalin look like a Republican.

Anyway, why did she retire? Well, in the world of 'be careful what you say when someone is holding a flip-camera in front of your face' this one was a doozy that ranks right up there with Trent Lott and his 'wouldn't it have been good if Strom Thurmond had been President' gaffe. Behold:

Generally, I'd say her remarks were well, uncool (and a little douchey) for one and generally way out of step with reality for another. While the current Israeli Government doesn't seem to grasp that demographically, they're going to have to make some tough choices about the future of the Jewish state, including whether continued occupation of the West Bank is tenable over the longterm, it's also worth noting that any group of people have a right to live in peace, free from rockets being dropped on their heads or being blown up by suicide bombers. In general, both sides need to pull their heads out of their asses and start talking. Because violence and occupation isn't doing anything for anyone at this point.
