I hate to beat a dead horse about this topic, but it's so damn interesting- the permutations could keep me busy for hours on end but this endless cycle of conference re-alignment just doesn't seem to end. The latest: Texas A&M is out- probably to the SEC. Some are predicting that Oklahoma will pull the trigger and jump to a gargantuan Pac-16 along with Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. The rage-inducing (at least for Aggie fans) Longhorn Network gets folded into the existing regional networks already in place in the Pac-12 and presumably, the SEC and Big 10 respond by kicking their own expansion into high gear.
So... if: Oklahoma Oklahoma State Texas Texas Tech all go to a Pac-16, who's left...
Texas A&M is going to the SEC.
Mizzou, Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Iowa State are left out in the cold. If the SEC wants geographic balance, then they'll snap up Mizzou along with Texas A&M and snag I'm betting Florida State and Virginia Tech from the ACC.
So what do the rest of the orphans do? I'm betting Kansas and Kansas State want to go to the Big East. Iowa State will be hoping desperately that it's place snuggled in the Big 10's geographic footprint will be good enough to score an invite and Baylor? I'm not sure where Baylor will go- probably Conference USA with Houston, SMU and the other nearby Texas schools, but I think there's an argument that they've got some basketball heft that the Big East might consider them. As for the Big 10, well, we all know what the Big 10 wants. We want Notre Dame. The other three schools that would get us to 16 are yet to be determined.
