Mexico has a bicentennial to celebrate this week (200 years since independence from Spain) as well as a centennial (100 years since the Mexican Revolution)- but given the rising violence in the north of the country as drug cartels are wailing on each other, a lot of people are asking: What is there to celebrate?
Personally, I'm glad that Mexico is marking the anniversary with something, despite the rough times it's going through. Anniversaries are important and taking time to think about where you've been and how far you've come (and how far you've got to go) is a good thing to do from time to time, for people as well as countries.
So, Happy Birthday Mexico!
