Thirty Years Ago...

Ronald Reagan was President
Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister
John Paul II was Pope
The Miami Hurricanes won the College Football National Title
(Iowa went 9-3 and lost the Gator Bowl to Florida.)
North Carolina State won the NCAA Men's Tournament (see: this moment which will now see until the end of the time, because it's just that awesome.)
(Iowa went 21-13 and made it to the Sweet 16 in Lute Olson's last year as Coach.)
USC won the NCAA Women's Tournament
(Iowa went 17-10 in C. Vivian Stringer's first year as Coach.)
The Baltimore Orioles won the World Series (Seriously?  I never knew that.)
The New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup (Wow.)
The Philadelphia 76ers won the NBA Title
The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their first album
Saint Kitts and Nevis became independent.
So did Brunei.
Sally Ride became the first American Woman in space.  (Yeah, the Soviets won that one.  By about twenty years or so- but, it's an achievement nonetheless. Ridiculously, this also happened.  In 1983.)
Benigno Aquino, leader of the Filipino Opposition was assassinated in Manilla. (One of the first projects I did in college was one of those 'find out what Newsweek was talking about the week you were born' papers and this was it.)
The Washington Redskins won Super Bowl XVII
The migration of ARPANET to TCP/IP was completed.   I have no idea what that means, but Wikipedia says it marked the start of the true internet.
The final episode of M*A*S*H aired.
Return of the Jedi opened in theaters.
'Every Breath You Take' by The Police topped the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles.
'Der Komissar' by After The Fire was number 30.
Liverpool F.C. won the First Division of The Football League (later to become the EPL)
Hamburg won The European Cup (later to become the UEFA Champions League)
This happened.
KISS appeared on MTV without makeup for the first time.
The United States invaded Grenada.  (Because we could, damn it!)
Martin Luther King Day was declared a Federal holiday.
...and I was born.

Four more days until I hit the big 3-0! #LastWeekOfMy20s
