And Then There Were 12
Sounds like Nebraska is a comin' to the Big 10. ESPN just broke the news that all the informal agreements for the move are in place, courtesy of orangebloods.com and Nebraska either has or will get a formal invite on Friday. What gets interesting now is how far this will go- will college athletics as we know it go BOOM or will it be a mild earthquake of sorts? If the Big 10 stops at 14 (which it looks set to do, if it can) then would the Pac-10 go all in and go for 16?
I don't know: but if this is on the level (and it looks to be) then I'm happy about it. Nebraska has never seemed like that good of a fit in the Big 12, especially when it expanded southwards. The Conference was too uneven and the style of football they play is more in line with Big 10 football from what I can see. They'll fit in well with the Big 10 and should have a damn good time of it- and personally, I welcome the challenge. Bring on the 'Huskers!
UPDATED: If Nebraska goes, then the scenario of a 6 team raid into the Big 12 South by the Pac-10 becomes a probability and not a possibility. Question is: will Texas axe Colorado in favor of Baylor? Baylor's got fans... and the whole thing could get political real quick if the Texas Legislature mandates that any conference moves has to keep Baylor in with Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M...
Yet at the same time, Orangebloods.com is reporting the Mizzou isn't get a lot of love from the Big 10 either- the Big 10 preferring instead to (once again) try and snag Notre Dame and looking at either Rutgers or Maryland for an eastern addition. I think that's what will end up happening, especially if the Big 12 South bolts for the Pac-10. The creation of one super-conference could lead to the creation of another, just so the Big 10/Pac-10 can maintain parity. And although I'm happy with Nebraska coming aboard, as an Iowan, I worry about Iowa State getting left out in the cold. The loss of revenue and prestige for the state would be significant.
