Former USC RB Reggie Bush announced he was returning his Heisman Trophy today, as the Heisman Trust was set to meet soon to decide what to do about Bush's Trophy in the wake of NCAA sanctions and penalties against USC for, amongst other things, letting Bush get benefits from various sports agents while he was the school (A big no-no.)
Life is pretty good for Reggie Bush. He won a Super Bowl has a good pro career going and survived dating Kim Kardashian- so it's probably no big thing that he's returning it. It is the first time in 75 years that someone has returned it though. I get his reasoning, but the benefits had no impact on his performance. If he had been popping pills or shooting 'roids, then yeah, they'd have a point. But benefits? Had no real impact on his performance that season...
Good gesture on his part? Sure. But necessary? Meh, I am of two minds about that. If the Heisman is about performance, then why not let him keep it? If it's not, then what's it about? (And keep in mind that OJ never gave his back.)
